1996: European Championship in England

The 1996's European Championship was held in Sweden.

As usual, the whole competition was divided in two phases: the first one was a qualifying phase and the second phase was a final tournament with the qualified teams.

Howewer, the 1996's edition brought some main changes in the format of the competition. After the fall of Soviet Union, a number of newly formed countries emerged. Obviously, the number of national teams increased too.

A record number of 47 national teams entered the qualifying. The final tournament doubled up, with 16 teams involved.

The 47 participants were divided into 8 groups with the winning teams qualified for the final phase. Also the six best runners-up were qualified to the final event, while the two worst had to play a play-off on a neutral ground to determine the last qualified team.

Thanks to the extended format of the final phase, all the major national teams were able to gain a spot in the final Championship.

The other relevant change concerned the point's system in the group's stages. A win giving now 3 points (instead of 2), and a draw still giving 1 point.
