2000: European Championship in Belgium and Netherlands

For the first time, the 2000's European Championship was co-hosted by two countries: Belgium and Netherlands.

As usual, the whole competition was divided in two phases: the first one was a qualifying phase involving a record number of 49 teams and the second phase was a final tournament with the qualified teams.

The final tournament doubled up, with 16 teams involved.

The 49 participants were divided into 9 groups with the winning teams qualified for the final phase. Also the first best runner-up directly qualified to the final event, while the eight remaining 8 runners-up entered a random play-off in two home-and-away games to decide the last four qualified teams.

Thanks to the extended format of the final phase, all the major national teams were able to gain a spot in the final Championship.

The other relevant change concerned the point's system in the group's stages. A win giving now 3 points (instead of 2), and a draw still giving 1 point.
