A complete coverage

2004: European Championship in Portugal

The 2004's UEFA European Championship was held in Portugal between June 12 and July 4, 2004.

As usual, the whole competition was divided in two phases: the first one was a qualifying phase involving a record number of 50 teams and the second phase was a final tournament with the qualified teams.

The final tournament involved 16 teams.

The 50 participants were divided into 10 groups with the winning teams qualified for the final phase. The  runners-up entered a random play-off in two home-and-away games to decide the last four qualified teams.

Thanks to the extended format of the final phase, all the major national teams were able to gain a spot in the final Championship.

The only surprise was the elimination of the newly formed Serbia and Montenegro national team finishing third behind Wales in a group 9 dominated by Italy and not able to reach the play-off.
