2008: European Championship in Austria and Switzerland

The 2008's UEFA European Championship was held in Austria and Switzerland between June 5 and June 4, 2008.

As usual, the whole competition was divided in two phases: the first one was a qualifying phase involving 50 teams and the second phase was a final tournament with the qualified teams.

The final tournament involved 16 teams.

The 50 participants were divided into 7 groups with the two best teams qualified for the final phase and no additional play-offs to be played.

The chosen format of the qualifying stage received some unfavorable critics because some teams had to play 14 matches at this stage of the tourney, posing some calendar's problem to the national federations.

The biggest upset of the qualifying stage was the elimination of England in a very contested group E, where the english national team finished third, with the same points as Israel and behind Croatia and a young and talented Russia.

Another unexpected elimination was the one of Serbia in a Group A won by a surprising Poland in front of Portugal.
In the same group A, the scheduled games between Armenia and Azerbaijan were cancelled by Uefa following their disputes. No points were awarded for the cancelled games.
